Georgina Cumming, Engineering Student

Central Queensland student Georgina Cumming is as passionate about a career in engineering as she is about her region.

So, her decision to complete her four-year engineering degree at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton was an easy one.

An added bonus was a $40,000 scholarship she was awarded to
help her launch a career in the region's resources sector.

'It's my proudest moment at university to date,' she says.

Georgina says her passion for a career in engineering was owed to her father who works nearby at the Gregory Crinum Mine with BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA).

'I have lived in the Central Highlands all my life, which I love, but I have also had the chance to observe the true nature of engineering through my father working and always enjoying his mechanical engineering diploma based role as a production foreman for BMA,' she says.

'Through dad, I have had the chance to see what a challenging and rewarding career the engineering field can be.'

With some experience in mining already under her belt working as a trades' assistant at the Gregory Crinum Mine, the former Marist College Emerald School Captain said it is also the working environment that attracts her to a career within the minerals and energy sector.

'I appreciate and respect the focus placed on people and safety,' she says.

'Knowing there are systems and a safety culture in place for me to return from work in the same condition I arrived is comforting.'

While life may be all about study at the moment for Georgina, this ambitious 18 year-old takes every opportunity to help out on her family's cattle property when she is in Emerald.

'Although we live in town, my family owns a cattle property near Anakie, which is further west again,' she said.

'The property encompasses most of my interests outside of study, such as cattle work - Mum refers to me as 'chief Jillaroo' - horse riding, shooting and chasing bulls with my stock whip.

'Apart from being 'out bush', I play guitar, sing and ride my unicycle.'

It's no surprise then that Georgina's dream job had to be 'something located outside'.
